The history of medical education in Iran dates back to Gundishapur University in fifth century AD. This University was one of the most prestigious scientific centers of its time and attracted many students and well-known scientists from different parts of the world. The work of many Iranian scientists and physicians in medicine such as Avicenna, Birooni and Rhazes has been taught for many centuries in the West and the East.
The first medical school in the modern history of Iran was established in Dar-ol-Fonoon as “Madreseh-Teb” 167 years ago and this school moved to its current location in Tehran University campus in 1935. School of Medicine of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) has served as the oldest, largest and most prestigious medical school in the country and the region and has nourished other medical universities as “the mother University of Iran” since then. TUMS attracts some of the most talented Iranian students each year by national entrance exam (concours) and also many international students, selected after rigorous evaluation. Currently, over 5000 students study different disciplines of medicine in this school in MSc, PhD, MD, Speciality/Subspecialty and Fellowship programs. School of Medicine has near 1100 faculty members, 39 departments, 16 affiliated teaching hospitals and many research centers in basic and clinical sciences.
Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) is accredited with premier status by the Accreditation Service for International Colleges (ASIC) and has ranked first in research and education among Iran’s Medical Universities in the past seventeen consecutive years.
